THE OPEN EXPERIENCE 2019
Experience the The Open in style at one of our three luxury homes in the Northern Irish countryside.
I am one of three sisters who are all passionate about old houses and their interior design. We are fortunate enough to own period properties, all within ten minutes of the historic village of Hillsborough. When visiting other places, we always look for older properties offering luxury accommodation. We are acutely aware of a shortage of high end places to stay in NI and I have already entered the B&B market with Bay Tree Boutique B&B. We are a golfing family and are very excited by the prospect of the 148th Open Championships coming to Northern Ireland and to Royal Portrush for the first time since 1951.
We have decided to open each of our houses for the duration of The Open Golf Championships 14 - 21 July 2019, offering luxury accommodation and breakfast, as well as transport to the Open (if required). Whilst we are approximately 70 miles from the course, we believe that what we can offer makes the journey worthwhile. Have a look at each of our properties and see for yourself, in the knowledge that the welcome and the hospitality will be exceptional!
Why Choose Us?
While there are many options when it comes to staying for the Open in 2019, we feel that we can provide a more personal experience that will make your stay all the more memorable. We are willing to tailor the services we offer to your needs and cater for you in a way that is simply not possible in a hotel setting. The accommodation will give you a glimpse into authentic Irish period homes, while also giving you the opportunity to sample some local produce with our breakfast menus.
During the Open, Portrush and the surrounding towns on the North Coast will be swamped, with the expected number of visitors set to exceed 100,000. With this in mind, we believe the idyllic setting of Hillsborough would be perfect, as it allows you to escape the chaos for relaxing evenings in an historic part of the country, with many options for fine dining and tranquil walks within 10 minutes of all properties.
If your departure time for the golf is a little on the early side, we are happy to provide tea and coffee to go with a beautiful breakfast hamper for you to eat upon your arrival in Portrush or on the way!
Bay Tree Boutique
Located just 2 miles from the historic Georgian village of Hillsborough, BTB is surrounded by beautiful countryside views which can be enjoyed from every window of the cosy stonewall cottage.
Built in 2002, the detached building has recently undergone a meticulous renovation, with all new fixtures and furnishings selected with your comfort in mind.
You will receive a warm welcome from myself, Susan, who will ensure that your stay is both enjoyable and memorable.
Located in a detached building, the newly- renovated accommodation at BTB is truly a space to call your own. You will immediately feel relaxed in the sheer comfort of the New England style interior.
Guests will have access to a fully fitted kitchen and living area, complete with a wood burning stove, spacious reception area and bathroom. On the first floor there are two luxurious en-suite bedrooms.
In the morning you will be invited into the owner’s dining room where you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast, when all ingredients used will be fresh and from local suppliers.
If you wish to read more about the Bay Tree Boutique B&B, we encourage you to check the rest of our website for further details and images.
Alison's home is a former schoolhouse dating back to 1853, when it was built by the local landowner, the Marquis of Downshire in a gothic style. It has been been lovingly restored, renovated and extended to a very high standard with contemporary interiors. There are 3 living areas: a large living/dining room, a conservatory and a study/office/games room. The house has 4 bedrooms and she would be in a position to offer two of these for guests to stay. One is the master bedroom with a super king sized bed which is located in its own wing and has a large ensuite. The other is smaller, with a double bed and has an ensuite containing a toilet and a sink, but there is a main bathroom close by with a shower and bath.
Breakfast will be a delicious affair, with a variety of continental and cooked foods, using locally sourced products.
Glenlagan is an Historic Buildings Grade B+ Georgian house with a Victorian extension owned by my other sister Katharine and set in 60 acres of rolling County Down countryside.
The house retains many original features including the granite flagstone entrance halls, doors, door casings and archways and in the last two decades the entire house has been loving restored to bring it back to its former Georgian splendour.
On the first floor, the house offers a large master bedroom with full en-suite bathroom, two further double bed bedrooms with communal shower room and facilities, and on the second floor, this shared area (ideal for a group booking) is made up of three newly restored attic bedrooms, one with period double bed and canopy, the others with Victorian cast iron king-size and brass double bed respectively. A separate bathroom serves these rooms.
The sitting and withdrawing rooms feature stunning views across the gardens and Lagan Valley with comfortable settees and period log burning open fires to relax with a glass of your favourite tipple.
To get you underway, each morning will start with a hearty breakfast including a choice of fresh fruits, cereals and juices, followed by either Irish smoked salmon with free range scrambled eggs or our delicious full Irish including locally produced sausages, bacon with free range eggs served with Irish potato and wheaten breads.
If you have enough energy left after your days at the golf, then there are plenty of walks on the estate to take in.
Things To Do
Our houses are in rural locations yet are close to many attractions and excellent golf courses, should you wish to incorporate this into your stay in Northern Ireland.
The beautiful village of Hillsborough is ten minutes by car where you can visit the Fort, the Forest Park and the Castle - the Queen's Northern Ireland residence. Hillsborough also boasts a superb range of restaurants, including The Parson's Nose, The Plough, The Hillside and Hara. These restaurants would provide a perfect place to eat and relax after your day at the golf.
A twenty minute drive will bring you to the capital city of Northern Ireland where you can visit many attractions, such as the Titanic Quarter - the area where Titanic was built, as well as Parliament Buildings, the shops at Victoria Square, Belfast City Hall, the Ulster Museum, Botanic Gardens and Queen's University to name but a few! The restaurant scene in Belfast is exceptional and we would have no problem making some recommendations should you wish to eat there, rather than locally in Hillsborough.
The East Coast
Driving east forty minutes will bring you to the picturesque east coast, the Mountains of Mourne and the Royal County Down Golf Course - rated as one of the world's top 100 golf courses. Playing this marvellous links course is a much sought day out for golfers from all over the world, for both its charm and considerable challenge! If interested, it would need to be booked
several months in advance. Other beautiful areas on the eastern coastline include the quaint seaside towns of Rostrevor and Warrenpoint and the stunning forest areas in the Ring of Gullion.
The North Coast
As well as hosting the British Open Golf Championships at Royal Portrush, the North Coast is a much visited tourist destination with the Giants Causeway, Rathlin Island, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, The Glens of Antrim and the many sandy beaches which stretch from Castlerock to Ballycastle. This truly is an area of exceptional beauty.
